This week, we were watching GoPro, Inc. (GPRO).

The stock is up well over 180% this week after GoPro announced a merger agreement with Starman Optical, a U.S.-based optical-photonics company.

Most traders still think of GoPro as the action camera company behind the HERO brand, but this deal could give the company a very different angle: optics, imaging, defense, aerospace, and AI data center infrastructure.

GoPro’s story is now tied to areas like:

  • Action cameras

  • Subscription and cloud services

  • AI content licensing

  • Optical transceivers

  • AI data center infrastructure

  • Defense, government, robotics, and aerospace

This is not a clean growth story yet.

GoPro recently reported $105M in quarterly revenue, down 31% year over year, but subscription and service revenue rose 11% to $29M, including $2M from AI content licensing.

The reason the stock moved is not the core camera business.

It is the potential reset.

The Starman deal is expected to add U.S.-made optical transceiver technology to GoPro’s portfolio, which could push the company into markets tied to AI infrastructure, optics, national security, and advanced imaging.

Why We Are Watching:

GPRO gives investors exposure to a highly speculative AI infrastructure pivot.

The key risk is that the merger still needs to close, the core camera business has been under pressure, and this is still a small-cap turnaround story.

But the setup has changed.

If the deal goes through, GoPro could move from being viewed as a struggling consumer camera company to a more diversified optics and imaging company with exposure to AI data centers and strategic U.S.-made hardware.
